Bilateral relations
Republic of Macedonia and Republic of Bulgaria established diplomatic relations on the level of Embassies on December 21, 1993.
Since the beginning of the Macedonian independence the relations between the Republic of Macedonia and the Republic of Bulgaria have positively developed, both on economic and cultural plan. The numerous meetings on the highest level and in all spheres have proved it in the recent years.
The agenda of the good neighbourly relations was enriched with the Bulgarian help at the time when Republic of Macedonia was confronted with the blockades.
Later, this experience gained value also through the accession of both countries to the projects on Corridor 10 for trans-border infrastructural connection of this part of Europe with the routes from the Black Sea and the Caucasus to the Adriatic shores of Albania and Italy and onward to the core of Europe.
The recognition of the independence of the Republic of Macedonia on behalf of the Republic of Bulgaria has a special place in the history of the Macedonian state. This gesture has a very serious political significance and a large doze of symbolism. For Macedonia, for the region and the world it is important that a neighbouring country is the first to recognize the new Balkan reality, established with the will of the Macedonian people through the referendum on the 8th of September.
The bilateral relations between the Republic of Macedonia and the Republic of Bulgaria are based on a solid legal ground with already signed 50 agreements and contracts and they further develop by signing new and harmonizing the existing contracts and agreements with the new situation, the membership of the Republic of Bulgaria in the European Union. |
